TIFR GS 2027 Exam Date and Important Dates

The TIFR GS 2027 exam is on Sunday, 13 December 2026, and registration closes at 11 pm on 25 October 2026. Note these dates now, because TIFR does not usually extend its deadlines.

TIFR GS 2027 Exam Timings (Subject-wise Shift)

The exam runs in two sessions. Your session depends on the subject test you choose.

Can you appear for two TIFR GS 2027 tests? Yes, as long as the timings do not clash. For example, you could take Mathematics (PhD at CAM) in the morning and Physics in the afternoon. You must submit a separate application and pay a separate fee for each test. If both tests make you eligible for the same program, TIFR will consider your best score.

The Subject Board of Computer and Systems Sciences offers two programs: Computer Science (CS) and Learning, Information and Data Sciences (LIDS). LIDS was earlier called “Systems Sciences.”

Programs Offered Through TIFR GS 2027

TIFR GS 2027 offers PhD and I-PhD programs in six core subjects, plus three PhD-only interdisciplinary programs. The table below shows which centre offers what.

PhD vs Integrated MSc-PhD (I-PhD) at TIFR

The PhD program is for students who already hold, or will complete, a Master’s degree or an eligible 4-year degree. The I-PhD program is for students joining after a Bachelor’s degree.

Three rules apply to every subject board:

1. I-PhD students who finish the program receive an MSc degree in addition to the PhD.
2. I-PhD students can leave with only an MSc if they meet their Subject Board’s requirements. They must declare this by the end of the second year and complete all MSc requirements by the end of the third year.
3. Students with a 4-year UG degree and at least 75% aggregate can apply directly to the PhD program. They will not get a Master’s degree along with the PhD unless their Subject Board allows it. Currently, only SBTCS (Computer Science) allows this. Others who want a Master’s may apply to the I-PhD program instead.

This matters for BTech, BS and BS-MS students. If a Master’s degree is important for your future plans, the I-PhD route may suit you better even if you qualify for direct PhD.

TIFR GS 2027 Eligibility Criteria (Program-wise)

To be eligible for TIFR GS 2027, you must hold the required degree, or be studying for it and finish it by July 2027. Final-year students can apply. The eligibility for each subject below is based on the official GS-2027 Eligibility Table, updated 16 September 2026.

TIFR GS 2027 Physics Eligibility

• PhD: MSc/MS or equivalent degree in Physics, with at least 5 years of study after Class 12. Students with a 4-year UG degree and at least 75% aggregate (or CGPA 7.5/10) can apply directly for PhD, but will not receive a Master’s with it.
• I-PhD: ME/MTech/BSc/BS/BE/BTech or equivalent in Physics of at least 3 years, or any other Science or Engineering degree of at least 3 years.
• Students who already have, or will complete, a Master’s degree by July 2027 are not eligible for Physics I-PhD.

TIFR GS 2027 Chemistry Eligibility

• PhD: MSc/MTech/MPharm or equivalent degree.
• I-PhD: 3-year BSc/BS or equivalent degree in science, engineering or medicine, in any field including Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Biotechnology.

TIFR GS 2027 Mathematics Eligibility

• PhD: MA/MSc/M.Math/M.Stat/ME/MTech in Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Technology. Students with a 4-year UG or BS-MS degree with at least 75% (CGPA 7.5/10) may be considered for PhD.
• I-PhD: BA/BSc/B.Math/B.Stat/BE/BTech in Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Technology.
• Candidates with a Master’s in Mathematics or Statistics are not eligible for I-PhD and must apply for PhD.

Applied & Computational Mathematics (CAM-ICTS) Eligibility

• PhD only: MA/MSc/M Math/M Stat/ME/MTech in any area of Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Technology.

TIFR GS 2027 Computer Science & LIDS Eligibility

• PhD: MTech/ME/MCA/MSc or equivalent in Computer Science, Electronics & Communications, Electrical Engineering or related branches, or in Mathematics or Physics. Also 4-year degree holders (BTech/BE/BS/BSc) in these branches with at least 75% aggregate or GPA 7.5.
• I-PhD: BSc (or any 3-year degree) in CS/ECE/EE/related branches, Mathematics or Physics, or BCA, or 4-year degree holders with below 75% aggregate or GPA below 7.5.

TIFR GS 2027 Biology (JGEEBILS) Eligibility

• PhD: Master’s in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Mathematics; or 5-year degrees such as MBBS or BDS; or professional Master’s such as MPharm or MTech.
• I-PhD: Bachelor’s in Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Computer Science, or any 4-year Bachelor’s (BTech, BE, BVSc, BPharm).
• Candidates with a Master’s in a non-Biology subject may join the I-PhD if they want an MSc plus PhD.

Physics of Life Eligibility

• PhD only: BE/BTech/ME/MTech/MSc/MS in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Computer Science.

Science Education (HBCSE) Eligibility

• PhD only: Master’s degree in any subject with at least 5 years of study after Class 12. Post-graduate diplomas do not count as Master’s degrees.

The GS-2027 advertisement and eligibility table do not mention any age limit. Always recheck the latest table at tifr.res.in/academics/eligibility.php before you apply.

Which TIFR GS 2027 Test Should You Take? (And GATE, JEST, NET Alternatives)

In most cases, you take the subject test that matches your program’s name. Some programs also accept scores from other GS-2027 subject tests if you tick the relevant check-box at registration. Many programs also accept GATE, JEST, NET or JRF as another way in.

Test-to-Program Mapping

The check-box option appears on the application screen when you register for a test. Read the official eligibility table carefully before ticking it, because the list of accepted subjects is different for each centre.

Biology Admission Through National Exams

Apart from JGEEBILS, Biology applicants can qualify through national-level exams:

• Candidates awarded a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) by CSIR, DBT, ICMR or UGC are eligible.
• Candidates in the top 5 percentile of GATE scorers are eligible.
• Candidates in the top 10 percentile of GATE, or those who qualified UGC/CSIR NET without JRF, may also be considered if they have at least 6 months of continuous research experience.
• NCBS accepts GATE scores in Ecology and Evolution.

GATE-based LIDS Applications at STCS

LIDS candidates may apply with GATE 2025, 2026 or 2027 scores in EE, ECE, Mathematics, or Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA). The eligibility rules are the same as for the GS test, and the application link goes live on 1 February 2027. If you take the GS-2027 test and also apply with GATE, TIFR will use your better result.

In general, individual programs may consider GATE 2025-2027 scores, JEST, and NET or JRF qualifications. Details on how to apply with these scores will appear on the relevant centre websites. TIFR GS 2027 Application Form: How to Apply

The TIFR GS 2027 application form is available only online at tifr.res.in/academics. The short link is tifr.link/gs-admissions. Registration is open from 26 September to 11 pm on 25 October 2026.

2. Register with a valid email ID and mobile number, then log in.

Students facing financial difficulty can request a waiver of the application fee. Upload the request during the online application, before 11 pm on 11 October 2026. You need any one of these supporting documents:

• A letter from your Principal or Head of Department on letterhead, explaining why you need the waiver, or
• An officially recognised EWS certificate, or
• For full-time employees, a letter from your current employer on letterhead, along with a salary slip.

Overseas Applicants

Applicants living outside India who cannot travel can take the GS-2027 exam in online proctored mode, at the same time as students in India. You must upload proof that you live overseas with your application. Once you choose the overseas option, you cannot change it.
