Background: Why This Exam Is Being Conducted
As per the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order dated 1st September 2025 in Civil Appeal 1385/2025 and 1386/2025, teachers teaching primary and secondary classes who have not previously qualified the TET are required to clear this eligibility test. The Court directed:
- Teachers with less than 5 years of service remaining as on the date of the order may continue in service till superannuation without qualifying the TET (though TET remains mandatory for any future promotion).
- Teachers recruited before the RTE Act and having more than 5 years to retire are obligated to qualify the TET within the extended timeline; failure to do so will require them to quit service, subject to terminal benefits as per rules.
- A subsequent Supreme Court order in Review Petition Diary No. 53434/2025 extended this timeline from 2 to 3 years — i.e., such teachers must now qualify the TET by 31st August 2028 instead of 31st August 2027.
Note: This eligibility test result/qualification is valid only for continuing in-service teachers and will not be valid for future direct recruitment to government teacher posts.
