How the EFLU PhD admission process works
EFLU runs a two-stage selection for candidates without UGC NET: a written entrance test, then an interview. UGC NET/JRF qualified candidates skip the written test and go straight to the interview. Final selection is based on overall merit across the entrance test (where applicable) and the interview.
- Apply online on the EFLU website (maximum two PhD programmes per candidate)
- Pay the application fee: Rs 500 for General/OBC, Rs 250 for SC/ST/PwBD

Reservation of seats
Seats follow central government reservation rules: 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 27% OBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS as per government norms. Supernumerary seats of up to 5% each are available for persons with disabilities, wards of defence personnel and Kashmiri migrants.
EFLU PhD fee structure
The EFLU PhD fee is very affordable. A General/OBC student pays about Rs 7,944 at the start of the programme, including a refundable library deposit of Rs 2,200. SC/ST students pay about Rs 5,986, and PwD students about Rs 4,038. Later semesters cost roughly Rs 3,600 to Rs 4,600 for General/OBC students.
EFLU PhD Duration and Academic Calendar 2026-27
The EFLU PhD duration is a minimum of three years (six semesters), including coursework. The maximum period is six years from the date of admission. Full-time scholars cannot work in any other institution while registered.

From Semester III onwards, scholars present their work to faculty and students every semester. A signed letter and progress report go to the Dean, Research, at the end of each semester.
EFLU PhD Coursework and Credit Requirements
Every EFLU PhD scholar must complete at least 16 credits of coursework in the first two semesters. There is no exemption, even for MPhil holders. Failing to finish coursework within one year leads to cancellation of admission.

Key coursework rules:
- Every course ends in a term paper, checked with anti-plagiarism software
- Plagiarism above 10% earns an F grade and resubmission within 15 days

From Supervisor to Thesis: The EFLU PhD Research Journey
Supervisor and Research Advisory Committee
The Board of Studies or School Board appoints each scholar’s supervisor from an approved panel. A co-supervisor can be added on the scholar’s written request. Each scholar also gets a Research Advisory Committee of the supervisor plus one or two faculty members.
UGC limits how many scholars each supervisor can guide: Professor 8, Associate Professor 6, Assistant Professor 4. Supervisors may take up to two extra international scholars on a supernumerary basis.
Detailed research proposal
After coursework, scholars write a detailed research proposal of about 10,000 words. It should cover the research problem, why it matters, a literature review, a theoretical framework and the methodology.
- Submit the proposal to the supervisor and Advisory Committee
- Revise based on their feedback
- Give an open presentation once the committee accepts it
- Send it through the Board of Studies to the Dean, Research, for final approval
If the committee rejects the proposal, the scholar gets one extra month to revise. A second rejection cancels admission.
Progress reports
Scholars present their progress to the Advisory Committee every semester and submit quarterly progress reports. Two consecutive unsatisfactory reports can lead to loss of fellowship and even cancellation of registration.

- No thesis can be submitted before six semesters are complete
- A pre-submission seminar and title approval are required two months before submission
- Similarity must stay below 10% on the university’s anti-plagiarism software
- Format: A4, both sides, Times New Roman 12 pt, 1.5 spacing, 3.5 cm left margin and 2.5 cm on other sides
- Normal upper limit: around 500 pages, excluding appendices
Evaluation and award of the degree
The thesis is evaluated by the supervisor and external adjudicators nominated by the Vice-Chancellor. Where possible, one examiner is from outside India. If all adjudicators recommend the award, a public viva voce is held with two weeks’ notice. The degree date is the day the Vice-Chancellor approves the result.

Part-Time PhD at EFLU for University Faculty
