JNVST Class 9 Lateral Entry Admission 2027-28: The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has released the Prospectus cum Notification for the Lateral Entry Selection Test for Admission to Class IX in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) for the Session 2027-28.

NVS is an autonomous organization under the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The selection test is conducted to fill up the vacant seats in Class IX available across JNVs functioning in 27 States and 8 Union Territories, except Tamil Nadu.

JNVST Class 9 Lateral Entry Admission 2027

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational, fully residential schools affiliated to CBSE, offering free education from Class VI to Class XII, including free board, lodging, uniforms and textbooks. Admissions to Class IX through lateral entry are made strictly against vacant seats and are subject to the availability of seats in the respective category/quota of the concerned JNV.

The notification is meant only for students currently studying in Class VIII during the 2026-27 academic session who wish to seek lateral entry admission to Class IX in a JNV of their own district. JNVST Class 9 Lateral Entry Notification 2027 Out

NVS has released a detailed prospectus cum notification on its official website, www.navodaya.gov.in, inviting online applications from eligible Class VIII students for admission to Class IX for the academic session 2027-28. Candidates and parents are strongly advised to go through the full notification before applying, as admission is offered only against vacant seats and is not guaranteed even after provisional selection.

Objectives of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme

  • To provide good quality modern education, including a strong component of culture, values, environmental awareness, adventure activities and physical education, predominantly to talented children from rural areas.
  • To ensure students attain a reasonable level of competency in three languages.
  • To promote national integration through migration of students between Hindi-speaking and non-Hindi-speaking States.

JNVST Class 9 Eligibility Criteria 2027

Who Can Apply

  • The candidate must be a bonafide resident of the district in which they are applying.
  • The candidate must be studying Class VIII during the 2026-27 academic session in a Government or Government-recognized school located in the same district where the JNV is functioning.
  • The district of residence and the district of Class VIII study must be the same.
  • Date of Birth must fall between 1st May 2012 and 31st July 2014 (both dates inclusive) — this applies uniformly to all categories, including SC/ST/OBC/Divyang candidates.
  • Only Indian Nationals studying Class VIII in India, in the concerned district, are eligible.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Candidates who have already passed Class VIII in a previous academic session.
  • Candidates whose date of birth falls outside the prescribed range.
  • Candidates whose district of Class VIII study differs from their district of residence.
  • Candidates studying in a school not recognized by the district administration where the JNV is located.
  • Candidates who have already appeared for the Lateral Entry Selection Test in a previous academic session.

JNVST Class 9 Reservation & Quota

Vacant seats under SC/ST/OBC/Divyang categories are reserved for candidates of the respective categories, and OBC reservation is applied as per the central OBC list. OBC candidates whose caste is not on the central list must apply as General candidates. A candidate studying in a school located in a rural area is treated as a rural candidate and considered under the open/rural quota; a candidate who has studied even a single day of Class VIII in a school located in an urban area is treated as an urban candidate. Provisional selection does not guarantee admission, as tentative vacancies may increase or decrease.

How to Apply for JNVST Class 9 Lateral Entry 2027

  • Candidates must apply online directly through www.navodaya.gov.in; the last date to apply is Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
  • Documents to be kept ready in soft copy (JPG, 10–100 KB): photograph, signature of parent, and signature of candidate.
  • Basic details such as State, District (residence and study), Aadhaar number, Class VIII study details, and APAAR ID/PEN must be filled in the application portal.
  • The application is free of cost and can be submitted from a desktop, laptop, mobile or tablet.
  • A help desk is available at every JNV to assist candidates/parents with the application free of cost.
  • A correction window for selected fields opens for two days after the last date of submission; no changes are allowed thereafter, and incorrect/unrectified applications are liable to cancellation if provisionally selected.

JNVST Class 9 Admit Card 2027

Admit cards will be made available on the application portal, preferably about one month before the examination, as per the schedule decided by NVS, and can be downloaded free of cost by candidates/parents before the test.

JNVST Class 9 Exam Pattern 2027

The Selection Test will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2027, at the JNV of the concerned district (or any other centre allotted by NVS), for a duration of 2½ hours (with 50 minutes’ additional time for Divyang candidates). Answers are to be marked on an OMR sheet in Blue/Black ball point pen only; the difficulty level of the paper corresponds to the Class VIII syllabus.

  • Marking scheme: 1 mark for each correct answer; there is no negative marking.
  • Candidates must score the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by NVS in all four subjects.
  • The merit list is prepared using marks from three subjects only — Mathematics + General Science + whichever of the two languages (English/Hindi) the candidate scored higher in.

Tie-Breaking Criteria

  1. Female candidates are preferred over male candidates.
  2. If the tie persists, the candidate with higher marks in the two subjects (excluding language) out of 30 is preferred.
  3. If still tied, the candidate with higher marks out of all four subjects (100) is preferred.
  4. If the tie remains unresolved, the younger candidate is preferred.

JNVST Class 9 Syllabus 2027

The test is based entirely on the Class VIII syllabus:

  • English (15 marks): Comprehension (unseen passage), word and sentence structure, spelling, jumbled words, passivisation, degrees of comparison, modal auxiliaries, prepositions, tense forms, reported speech.
  • Hindi (15 marks): वर्ण/वर्तनी विवेक, शब्द-भेद, पर्याय/विलोम, पद-भेद एवं पद परिचय, वाक्य शुद्धिकरण, वाक्य रचनांतरण, मुहावरे, लोकोक्तियाँ, अपठित बोध।
  • Mathematics (35 marks): Rational numbers, squares & square roots, cubes & cube roots, exponents & powers, direct & inverse proportions, comparing quantities, algebraic expressions & identities, linear equations in one variable, understanding quadrilaterals, mensuration, data handling.

Provisionally selected candidates must submit the following for verification at the time of admission:
