Change 1: New Post Added – Sub-Inspector (Fire) in CISF
For the first time, SSC CPO 2026 includes the post of Sub-Inspector (Fire) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). This is a big opportunity, especially for science graduates and engineering diploma holders.

Educational qualification for SI (Fire): Candidates must have either
- a Bachelor’s degree in Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), or
- Matriculation plus a 3-year diploma in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Automobile, Chemical, Mining, Aeronautical or Telecommunication Engineering (or equivalent).
A B.Tech/M.Tech in a relevant field is treated as a value addition, but the basic diploma qualification must be there.
Why this matters: The age limit for SI (Fire) is much wider (18–30 years) compared to the regular SI posts (20–25 years). So candidates who have crossed 25 years but have a B.Sc. (PCM) or an engineering diploma can still try for this post. Also, the chest requirement for SI (Fire) is slightly higher — 81 cm unexpanded and 86 cm expanded for general male candidates (compared to 80/85 cm for other posts).
Change 2: Paper-I Is Now Shorter – 100 Questions in 1 Hour
Paper-I has been cut to half. Earlier, it had 200 questions for 200 marks in 2 hours. Now it has only 100 questions for 100 marks in 1 hour.

Key points about Paper-I:
- There is a sectional timer of 15 minutes for each part. You cannot move freely between sections, so you must finish each section within its own time.
- Each question carries 1 mark, and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
- Paper-I is now mainly a screening test. It is used to shortlist candidates for PST/PET. The Commission can also fix different cut-offs for each part of Paper-I.
- Paper-I marks will not be added in the final merit list (explained in Change 5).
What students should understand: You get roughly 36 seconds per question. Speed and accuracy in all four sections are important because a weak section can stop you due to part-wise cut-offs.
Change 3: Paper-II Is No Longer English Only
This is probably the biggest change in SSC CPO 2026. Earlier, Paper-II was only an English test. Now, Paper-II includes all four subjects and carries 320 marks.

Key points about Paper-II:
- Every question carries 2 marks.
- Parts I, II and III together take 1 hour (20 minutes each with a sectional timer). English alone gets 1 hour.
- Questions in Reasoning, GK and Quant will be available in Hindi and English; the English section will be in English.
- The official notice clearly says that the difficulty level of Paper-II will be higher than Paper-I.
What students should understand: Even though new subjects have been added, English is still the king of Paper-II — it carries 200 out of 320 marks (62.5%). So English will decide most of your final rank. At the same time, Reasoning, GK and Quant together carry 120 marks, which is enough to make a big difference in a close competition.
In Parts I–III, you get about 1 minute per question, but questions will be tougher. In English, you get only 36 seconds per question for 100 questions, so reading speed matters a lot.
Change 4: Negative Marking Increased to 0.50 in Paper-II
In SSC CPO 2025, the negative marking was 0.25 in both papers. In SSC CPO 2026:

Do not panic — here is the simple truth: Since each Paper-II question now carries 2 marks, a penalty of 0.50 is still one-fourth of the question’s marks, which is the same ratio as before. But in terms of actual numbers, every wrong answer now costs you more.
Example: Suppose in Paper-II you attempt 140 questions and get 120 right and 20 wrong.
- Marks for correct answers: 120 × 2 = 240
- Negative marks: 20 × 0.50 = 10
- Final score = 230 out of 320
If the same 20 wrong answers were marked at 0.25, you would lose only 5 marks. So blind guessing is more costly now. Attempt only those questions where you can at least eliminate one or two options.
Change 5: Final Merit Will Be Based on Paper-II Only
Earlier, the final merit list was prepared by adding Paper-I and Paper-II marks. From 2026, final selection and allocation of post/force will be based only on Paper-II marks (plus NCC bonus, if applicable) and the post preferences you give.
What this means for you:
- Paper-I is a gateway, not a rank-decider. You must clear the minimum qualifying marks and the cut-off to reach PST/PET, but your Paper-I score will not directly affect your final rank.
- Paper-II is everything. A candidate who scores slightly less in Paper-I but performs very well in Paper-II can get a better post.
- Your preparation must be deep, not just fast. Since Paper-II is tougher and decides the final result, you need strong concepts in all four subjects, and especially excellent English.

NCC Bonus Marks in SSC CPO 2026
NCC certificate holders (as on the closing date of application) will get bonus marks in both Paper-I and Paper-II. These bonus marks are added to normalized scores.

Since Paper-II is out of 320 marks, the NCC bonus in Paper-II is now quite large. An NCC ‘C’ certificate holder gets 16 extra marks in the paper that decides the final merit — that is a strong advantage.
Change 6: Exam Centres Must Be From the Same Region
In SSC CPO 2026, you can choose three exam centres in order of preference, but all three must be within the same SSC region. Earlier, candidates could pick three centres from anywhere in India.

Tip: Choose your region carefully — usually the one closest to where you live. Once submitted, no request for change of centre will be accepted later.
Change 7: Transgender Option Added in Gender Column
The online application form for SSC CPO 2026 now allows candidates to select their gender as Male, Female or Transgender. Earlier, only Male and Female options were available. This is a step towards a more inclusive recruitment process.
Change 8: New Tie-Breaking Rule – English Marks Get Priority
If two or more candidates get the same marks, SSC will break the tie in this order:
- Total marks in Paper-II
- Marks obtained in English in Paper-II (new)
- Date of birth — older candidate placed higher
- Alphabetical order of names
The addition of “English marks in Paper-II” again shows how important English is in the new pattern. If you are strong in English, you have an edge even in tie situations.
Change 9: Ex-Servicemen Must Now Clear PST
Ex-Servicemen (ESM) candidates are still not required to appear in the PET (running, jumps, shot put). However, the notice now clearly says that PST (Physical Standard Test) of ESM candidates will be conducted. So ESM candidates must meet the prescribed height, chest and weight standards. They must also clear the written exams and the medical standards applicable to direct recruits.
Change 10: New Malpractice Added – 19 Categories Now
SSC has added a 19th malpractice to its list:
Peeking into another candidate’s computer, or talking/interacting with any other candidate during the exam — debarment of 1 to 3 years.
Other serious malpractices (such as impersonation, using unfair means, taking photos/videos of the question paper, or remote access of the exam terminal) can lead to debarment of up to 7 years. SSC also uses log analysis, photo/biometric verification and CCTV footage review after the exam, so candidates must follow all exam rules strictly.
SSC CPO 2026 Selection Process (Step by Step)
Here is how the complete selection process works in the new pattern:
- Paper-I (CBT): 100 questions, 1 hour. Qualifying/screening stage for PST/PET.
- PST/PET: Physical Standard Test and Physical Endurance Test. Qualifying in nature, no marks.
- Paper-II (CBT): 160 questions, 320 marks, 2 hours. Only those who clear PST/PET can appear.
- Detailed Medical Examination (DME/RME) and Document Verification: Qualifying in nature.
- Final Merit and Post Allocation: Based on Paper-II marks (+ NCC bonus) and your post preferences.
Post preference: After the Paper-II result, you will fill an online option form for posts/forces. Once submitted, it is final and cannot be changed. How Should You Change Your Preparation Strategy?
Understanding the changes is only half the job. Here is how the new pattern should shape your study plan:
1. Make English your strongest subject. English carries 200 of 320 marks in Paper-II and is also the second tie-breaker. Work daily on grammar (error spotting, fill in the blanks), vocabulary, idioms, synonyms/antonyms and reading comprehension. Since you get only 36 seconds per question, practise timed sets regularly.
2. Don’t ignore Reasoning, GK and Quant in Paper-II. These three sections are worth 120 marks and will be tougher than Paper-I. Focus on concept clarity in Quant (geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, algebra, data interpretation) and higher-level reasoning (critical thinking, syllogism, statement-conclusion).
3. Practise with sectional timers. Both papers have sectional timers. Train yourself to finish each section within its time instead of spending extra minutes on one section.
4. Improve accuracy. With 0.50 negative marking in Paper-II, 10 wrong answers can cost you 5 full marks. In a tight merit list, that could decide your selection. Avoid random guessing.
5. Clear Paper-I safely, but don’t over-invest in it. Paper-I only takes you to the PET stage. Aim for a safe score with balanced performance across all four parts, because part-wise cut-offs may be applied.
6. Start physical training early. PST/PET comes before Paper-II. If you fail PET, you will not even get a chance to write Paper-II, no matter how good your written preparation is.
7. Check your SI (Fire) eligibility. If you are a B.Sc. (PCM) graduate or a diploma holder in the listed engineering branches, consider adding SI (Fire) in your preference list — especially if you are above 25 years.
