GATE 2027 Highlights of Changes
- A new test paper on Robotics and Automation (RA) has been introduced in GATE 2027.
- Textile Engineering & Fibre Science (TF) paper will now be part of the XE sectional paper (as XE9: Textile Engineering & Fibre Science).
- Paper codes for the sectional papers XE, XH and XL have changed for GATE 2027.
- Syllabus of GATE 2027 test papers has been revised; candidates are advised to check the updated syllabus.
- Applicants are required to provide live facial details during the registration process, and it is recommended to register with a verified DigiLocker account for a smoother process.
- There is NO age limit to appear for GATE 2027.
Eligibility Criteria
The candidates who wish to apply for GATE 2027 need to satisfy the eligibility criteria as prescribed in the Information Bulletin.
- A candidate currently studying in the 3rd or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme, or who has already completed any UGC/AICTE-approved degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Commerce/Arts/Humanities, is eligible.
- A candidate currently studying in the 5th/6th/7th semester or higher, or who has already completed M.B.B.S./B.D.S./B.V.Sc./B.Sc. (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry), is also eligible.

Candidates pursuing or holding an equivalent qualifying degree from countries other than India must currently be in the 3rd year or higher, or must have completed a Bachelor’s degree of at least 3 years’ duration. GATE 2027 Test Papers
GATE 2027 will be conducted for 30 test papers. Candidates are allowed to appear for one or two test papers, and the combination of two papers must be chosen from a prescribed list of allowed combinations.

Examination Cities
GATE 2027 will be held at centres spread across 300+ cities in India, administratively divided into eight zones coordinated by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee. A candidate can choose three exam cities from the same zone; the GATE Committee reserves the right to add/remove cities or allot a city not among the candidate’s choices due to operational constraints.
GATE 2027 Application Fee
The application fee must be paid electronically (UPI, debit/credit card, wallet, internet banking); the fee is not transferable and is non-refundable except in specific cases. For two papers, the fee payable is twice that of a single paper, and does not include bank service/processing charges.

Distribution of Marks
- For most papers (except AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH, XL): General Aptitude – 15 marks; Engineering Mathematics – 13 marks; Subject Questions – 72 marks; Total – 100 marks.
- For AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH and XL: General Aptitude – 15 marks; Subject Questions – 85 marks; Total – 100 marks.
Marking Scheme: Questions carry either 1 or 2 marks each. For a wrong MCQ answer, 1/3 mark is deducted for a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark for a 2-mark question. There is no negative marking for MSQ or NAT questions, and no partial marking for any question type.
PwD candidates are eligible for compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour, subject to submission of the required documents as per Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment guidelines.
How to Apply for GATE 2027
Applications must be submitted online only through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS), accessible from https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Hard copies of application forms/documents must NOT be sent to IIT Madras or any GATE office. Key steps include:
- Register and enrol (a verified DigiLocker account is recommended for a smoother process).
- Provide live facial details during registration.
- Upload photograph, signature, photo ID (Aadhaar-UID, Aadhaar Virtual ID, Passport, PAN, Voter ID, Driving License, or other valid Govt.-issued photo ID), and category certificates (SC/ST/PwD/Dyslexia), as applicable.
- Pay the application fee through listed electronic payment modes.
- Only one person can register with one email address; no change in email/mobile number is allowed later.
- Each registered candidate receives a unique Enrolment ID, required for all future communication.
GATE 2027 Score & Validity
GATE 2027 results will be announced on 19th March 2027, and the GATE score will remain valid for THREE years from the date of result announcement. Score cards will be available for free download for a limited period, and thereafter for download at Rs. 500/- per test paper until 31st December 2027.
Opportunities with GATE Qualification
A qualifying GATE score enables candidates to seek admission (with possible financial assistance) to Master’s and Direct Doctoral programmes in Engineering/Technology/Architecture, and Doctoral programmes in related branches of Science/Humanities at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education. MoE guidelines prescribe a minimum 70% weightage to GATE performance for scholarship/assistantship-linked admissions. GATE scores are also used by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) — including BHEL, IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, POWERGRID, SAIL, NALCO, GAIL and others — in their recruitment process, as well as for direct recruitment to certain Group-A posts in the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India.
