UIIC AO Selection Process and Exam Pattern 2026 (Revised): Prelims, Mains, Descriptive & Interview

UIIC AO 2026 selection process revised — new Prelims stage, changed Mains pattern for Generalists & Hindi Officers, descriptive rules, merit ratio & interview.

United India Insurance Company has completely restructured the Administrative Officer (Scale I) selection process for 2026. The single-exam format used in the 2024 cycle is gone.

The revised process now has four stages:

1. Tier I — Preliminary Examination (new) — 100 marks, 60 minutes
2. Tier II — Main Examination (objective) — 250 marks for Generalists, 200 marks for Hindi Officers
3. Descriptive Test — administered immediately after the Mains objective paper
4. Interview

Two changes matter more than anything else on this page. First, Prelims marks do not count towards the final merit list — it is purely a screening filter. Second, the Descriptive Test counts towards merit for Hindi Officers but not for Generalists. Most coverage of this notification misses the second point entirely.

What changed from the 2024 cycle

If you prepared for UIIC AO in 2024, throw the old plan out. Here is the structural difference.

The entire Specialist stream — 100 posts across six technical disciplines in 2024 — has been dropped. Generalist vacancies doubled from 100 to 200, and a new 25-post Hindi Officer stream was created.

Stage 1: Tier I Preliminary Examination

Applicable to both Generalists and Hindi Officers. The pattern is identical for both.

Key rules for Prelims

• Separately timed sections. You cannot carry unused time from Reasoning into Quant. Twenty minutes per section, locked.
• Sectional cut-off applies. You must clear the minimum in each section and the overall qualifying score set by the Company.
• Negative marking applies. One-fourth mark deducted per wrong answer. No penalty for unattempted questions.
• Marks do not carry forward. The notification states plainly that Preliminary Examination marks shall not be considered for preparation of the final merit list.
• Adequate numbers in each category, as decided by the Company, are shortlisted for Mains.

What this means for your strategy

Prelims is a gate, not a scoreboard. Scoring 92 versus 68 gains you nothing beyond qualifying. The correct approach is to clear every sectional cut-off comfortably and stop taking risks — with negative marking at 1/4 and only 20 minutes per section, aggressive guessing to inflate a score that will be discarded is a poor trade.

Stage 2: Tier II Main Examination — Generalists

Objective test of 200 questions / 250 marks / 150 minutes, followed immediately by the Descriptive Test.

How the Mains weightage shifted from 2024

Two takeaways. Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness are now the highest-leverage sections, at 60 marks each with GA offering 60 marks in just 30 minutes — the best marks-per-minute return on the paper. And Computer Knowledge has collapsed from 40 marks to 20. In 2024, Computer was worth two marks per question and was a scoring goldmine. That advantage is gone.

Note that several sections have more marks than questions — Quant is 50 questions for 60 marks, GA is 40 questions for 60 marks. Marks per question are not uniform across the paper, which also means the 1/4 negative marking penalty is heavier in the high-value sections.

Stage 3: Descriptive Test — Generalists

• Duration: 30 minutes
• Marks: 30
• Questions: 2
• Components: Letter Writing (10 marks) + Essay (20 marks)
• Medium: English only
• Mode: Typed on computer, immediately after the objective paper

The critical rule for Generalists

The notification states that the final merit list is prepared from the Main Examination Objective Test and the Interview in a 75:25 ratio, and that marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination and the Descriptive Test shall not be considered.

So the Descriptive is purely qualifying for Generalists. You must clear the cut-off the Company sets, but a brilliant essay earns you nothing on the merit list. Do not over-invest here — clear it cleanly and put your hours into Quant and GA.

Descriptive answer scripts are evaluated only for candidates who qualify the objective Mains.

Stage 2 & 3: Main Examination — Hindi Officers

The Hindi Officer paper is a genuinely different exam, not a variant of the Generalist one.

Objective paper — 150 questions / 200 marks / 120 minutes

Professional Knowledge alone is worth 100 of 200 marks — half the paper. It covers Hindi and English grammar and vocabulary, knowledge of the Act and Rules regarding Official Language implementation, and translation in both directions (English to Hindi and Hindi to English).

If you are targeting the Hindi Officer post, the Official Language Act and Rules and translation practice are not supplementary topics. They are the exam.

Descriptive paper — 5 questions / 50 marks / 60 minutes

The rule Hindi Officer candidates must not miss

For Hindi Officers, the merit list is prepared from the Main Examination comprising the Objective Test AND the Descriptive Test, together with the Interview, in a 75:25 ratio.

The Descriptive Test counts towards merit for Hindi Officers. This is the opposite of the Generalist rule, and it is stated in a single sentence in the notification that is easy to skim past. A Hindi Officer aspirant treating the descriptive as merely qualifying is preparing on a false assumption for 50 marks that directly affect rank.

Hindi typing requirement

Descriptive answers are typed on a computer. Candidates must know one of two keyboard layouts:

• Inscript
• Remington (GAIL)

Sixty minutes for five written components leaves no room to fight the keyboard. Typing speed practice in your chosen layout should start now, not in November.

Stage 4: Interview

• Candidates qualifying the Main Examination are called up to three times the vacancies of the respective category and discipline.
• Conducted at select centres.
• Weightage 75:25 — Main Examination to Interview.
• Outstation candidates are reimbursed to-and-fro Sleeper Class rail or bus fare by the shortest route, on submission of valid proof of the journey.

A new clause worth reading twice

The 2026 notification adds a provision absent in 2024: mere participation in the interview shall not be construed as confirmation of fulfilment of eligibility criteria. If at any stage — including during or after the interview — you are found not to meet the eligibility norms, your candidature is liable to be cancelled regardless of whether you completed the interview, and you forfeit travel reimbursement.

Verify your own eligibility on age, percentage and qualification date before you spend a season preparing.

How your score is actually calculated

The notification sets out the scoring mechanics explicitly:

1. Corrected Score — questions answered correctly, after applying the 1/4 penalty for wrong answers.
2. Equated Score — corrected scores are normalised across sessions to adjust for minor differences in difficulty between test batteries. Scores are equated to the base form using the distribution of scores across all forms.
3. Scores are reported to two decimal places.
4. Sectional cut-offs plus an overall cut-off apply in each category.
5. Tie-break: where two candidates have the same consolidated score, the older candidate is placed higher.

Normalisation matters more than most candidates realise. Your raw score is not your final score if your session was easier than another; comparing your marks against a friend in a different shift is meaningless until equating is applied.

Pre-Examination Training (new in 2026)

UIIC will arrange free online Pre-Examination Training for SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and PwBD candidates, in line with Government of India guidelines.

• You must opt in via the relevant column in the online application form — it cannot be requested later.
• Schedule intimation goes to your registered email and mobile. No hard copies are sent.
• Attending PET confers no right to employment.

This did not exist in the 2024 notification. If you are eligible, tick the box at application stage; there is no downside.

Exam day: what you must carry

The notification is explicit that candidates will not be permitted to appear without all of the following:

1. Valid call letter with a recent recognisable photograph affixed
2. Photo identity proof in original, with the name exactly matching the call letter
3. Photocopy of the photo identity proof
4. Two copies of a recent passport size photo
5. Other documents applicable to PwBD candidates

Ration card and Learner’s Driving Licence are not valid ID for this process.

Accepted ID includes PAN card, Passport, Driving Licence, Voter’s Card, bank passbook with photograph, Aadhaar with photograph, employee ID, recognised college or university ID, or Bar Council ID.

If your name has changed after marriage, you must produce the original Gazette notification, marriage certificate or affidavit. Name mismatches between call letter and ID are a common, avoidable rejection.

Reporting time

• Prelims: exam runs 1 hour; expect to be at the venue about 2 hours or more
• Mains: exam runs 3 hours; expect to be at the venue about 4 hours or more

Candidates arriving after the reporting time on the call letter will not be allowed in under any circumstances. Mobile phones and electronic devices are banned across the entire examination campus. Biometric capture — photo and thumb impression or IRIS scan — may be taken at various stages, so avoid mehendi or ink on your hands.

Rules that can cancel your candidature

Worth knowing before you apply, not after:

• One application only. You may apply for either Generalists or Hindi Officers, not both. Multiple registrations or appearances lead to cancellation.
• No category or discipline change is permitted after registration. No correspondence entertained.
• Serving UIIC AOs (Scale-I) are not eligible to apply or appear.
• Response pattern analysis. Answers are compared across candidates to detect similarity. Suspected sharing leads to cancellation and withheld results.
• Unruly behaviour in the hall can disqualify you from this exam and from future UIIC exams.
• Incorrect information or process violation detected at any stage — including after you have joined — results in disqualification or termination with retrospective effect.

Provisions for PwBD candidates

• Compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour for candidates using a scribe, for those with locomotor disability or cerebral palsy affecting the writing extremity (minimum 40% impairment), and for those with more than 40% intellectual disability.
• Visually impaired candidates (not less than 40% disability) may opt for magnified font, with the same compensatory time.
• You must register for compensatory time and scribe facility in the online application form. The concession is system-based and cannot be granted at the centre if you did not register for it.
• The scribe must not be a candidate for the same examination, must not be a current UIIC employee, cannot serve two candidates, and must hold a qualification one step below yours.
• Expanded misconduct rule in 2026: cancellation now applies not only if a scribe independently answers questions, but also if the scribe provides hints, cues, prompts or assistance of any kind, direct or indirect — including where this is reported after the exam has concluded.
• Candidates with less than 40% disability and difficulty in writing may avail a scribe or compensatory time on production of a certificate from a Government healthcare institution as per Appendix-II.

New disability certificate rule

Per Office Memorandum No. 18-25/2024-Policy dated 17.12.2025, PwBD candidates whose certificate records the condition as “likely to improve” under the temporary disability category are not eligible for reservation. Those with conditions recorded as “progressive, non-progressive or not likely to improve” remain eligible. Check the wording on your certificate before applying.

Is there a Prelims exam for UIIC AO 2026?
