The detailed advertisement says CBE marks are counted out of 100 for merit ranking, while the exam pattern has 120 one-mark questions. This suggests raw scores will be scaled to 100. BHEL has not explained this, so check careers.bhel.in for any clarification.

BHEL Artisan Shortlisting for Skill Test

After the BHEL Artisan CBE, candidates will be shortlisted for the skill test based on their CBE marks, in the ratio of 1:3 to the number of vacancies. Shortlisting is done for each trade and category within the unit you applied to. If there is only one vacancy in a trade or category, a maximum of 5 candidates will be called. The steps are:

  1. All UR candidates, plus reserved category candidates who do not use any relaxation, are ranked together by CBE marks. The UR list is drawn up at 1:3.
  2. Reserved category (EWS/OBC/SC/ST) candidates not selected in the UR list are then ranked within their own category and shortlisted at 1:3 for the vacancies of that category.
  3. PwD and Ex-Servicemen candidates can be shortlisted using the relaxed qualifying marks.

BHEL Artisan Selection Stages

The BHEL Artisan selection process has two stages after the application. The CBE decides the final merit order, and the skill test is only qualifying. The BHEL Artisan selection stages are given below.

BHEL Artisan Exam Rules

  • Calculators, slide rules, smartphones, smart watches and any study or reference material are not allowed. Using them will lead to disqualification.
  • The CBE for all units and trades will be held on the same day, so candidates can apply for only one unit and one trade.
  • A scribe is available for eligible benchmark disability candidates who bring the original medical and physical limitation certificates.
  • BHEL may add or cancel exam cities depending on the number of candidates.

BHEL Artisan Exam Preparation Tips

About eight weeks remain until the tentative CBE date. Plan your BHEL Artisan preparation around the weightage of each section:

  • Focus on your trade first: 70 of the 120 questions come from your own trade. Revise your ITI trade theory and the practical knowledge from your apprenticeship.
  • Practise calculations without a calculator: calculators are not allowed, so practise the engineering calculations section with pen and paper.
  • Build speed in reasoning: the 20 reasoning questions can be scored quickly with regular practice.
  • Manage time: 120 questions in 90 minutes gives you about 45 seconds per question.
  • Avoid blind guessing: each wrong answer costs 1/4 mark, so answer only when you are reasonably sure.
  • Choose your exam language wisely: pick the language you read fastest. If anything is unclear, the English version is final.
