Eligibility Criteria for NSOU B.Ed. Special Education 2026-27

Before applying, candidates must carefully check whether they meet the eligibility requirements as specified in the official notification.

Category 1 — Candidates with RCI Recognized D.Ed. in Special Education: A candidate who holds an RCI recognized D.Ed. in Special Education or an equivalent qualification through regular mode and has secured at least 50% marks either in the Bachelor's Degree or in the Master's Degree in Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities — or a Bachelor's in Engineering or Technology with specialization in Science and Mathematics with 55% marks — is eligible for admission.

Category 2 — Candidates without RCI Recognized D.Ed. in Special Education: A candidate who does not hold any RCI recognized D.Ed. in Special Education or equivalent through regular mode but has secured at least 50% marks either in the Bachelor's Degree or in the Master's Degree in Sciences, Social Sciences, or Humanities — or a Bachelor's in Engineering or Technology with specialization in Science and Mathematics with 55% marks — is also eligible to apply.

Reservation and Relaxation: Mark relaxation for Reserved Category candidates will be applicable as per the rules of the Government of West Bengal. Seat reservation will also follow existing State Government rules. Caste certificates must be issued by the competent authority of the State of West Bengal.

Special Weightage: Special weightage may be given to candidates who are parents of a child with disability, provided they hold a valid Disability Certificate of the child issued by the Competent Authority.


Duration of the Program

The duration of the B.Ed. Special Education ODL program varies depending on the candidate's previous qualifications:

  • 4 Semesters (2 Years) — for candidates who have completed an RCI recognized Diploma in Special Education or an equivalent qualification through regular mode.
  • 5 Semesters (2.5 Years) — for candidates who have not completed any RCI recognized Diploma in Special Education or equivalent through regular mode.

Admission Procedure: How Merit is Calculated

Admission to the NSOU B.Ed. Special Education ODL program is based entirely on academic merit. There is no entrance examination. The merit score is calculated out of a total of 100 marks as follows:

Note: For the Higher Secondary score, the average of all subjects excluding Environmental Studies will be calculated on a percentage basis.

How to Apply for NSOU B.Ed. Special Education 2026-27

Step 1 — Visit the Official Website Go to www.wbnsou.ac.in from 12 May 2026 onwards (from 4:00 PM) to access the online application form.

Step 2 — Fill the Online Application Form Fill in all required details accurately, including your personal information, educational qualifications, and choice of specialization (IDD, HI, or VI).

Step 3 — Upload Required Documents Upload scanned copies of all necessary documents including marksheets, certificates, caste certificate (if applicable), and disability certificate of child (if claiming special weightage).

Step 4 — Pay the Processing Fee Pay the non-refundable processing fee of Rs. 500/- online at the time of submitting the application.

Step 5 — Submit the Application Submit the completed application form before 6 June 2026 (6:00 PM). Keep a copy of the submitted form for future reference.

Step 6 — Check Provisional Merit List Visit the NSOU website on 16 June 2026 after 6:00 PM to check the Provisional Merit List.

Step 7 — Attend Central Counselling Attend the Offline Central Counselling as per the schedule notified on 16 June 2026 along with the Provisional Merit List. Carry all original documents and a Demand Draft or payment for the course fee of Rs. 40,000/- for spot admission at the NSOU HQ, Kolkata.

Mandatory Contact Programs and Practicum Requirements

Since this is an ODL program, prospective students must be aware of certain mandatory in-person requirements as per UGC-ODL guidelines and RCI norms:

  • A minimum of 60 hours of face-to-face Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs) per semester is mandatory.
  • This translates to 10 days of in-person sessions per semester, with each day comprising 6 hours of engagement.
  • The practicum component of the program will be strictly governed by RCI Norms and Regulations, and students must fulfill all requirements stipulated by the RCI for successful completion of their practical training.

This is an important point for candidates who are working professionals — you must be able to attend these mandatory in-person sessions at your respective study centre.
