The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standards Body, runs the BIS Laboratory Internship Scheme (revised with effect from July 28, 2025) to engage students as Interns across its network of laboratories. Interns are exposed to real laboratory operations and are also required to carry out regular testing of products received under various BIS conformity assessment schemes.

BIS Laboratory Internship Scheme: Highlights

BIS Laboratory Internship Eligibility Criteria 2026

Candidates must meet the following eligibility conditions to apply for the BIS Laboratory Internship Scheme:

Must be enrolled in a University/Institution within India that is State-promoted or recognised by the Association of Indian Universities.

Eligible course levels include:

• Undergraduate courses (having completed at least 4 semesters)
• Postgraduate courses (having completed at least 2 semesters)
• Post Graduate Diploma courses
• Research Scholars
• Diploma courses

Degree/Diploma holders who completed their studies within the last 180 days are also eligible. (The 180-day period is calculated from the last date of the applicant’s academic term to the date of submission of the internship application.)

UG/PG/PG Diploma students must have a good academic record with a minimum of 75% marks or a CGPA of 7.5 out of 10 in their last declared semester result.

Research Scholars must have a good academic record with a minimum First Division or CGPA of 7.5 out of 10 in their Postgraduation.

Applicants must be Indian Nationals.

Eligible Disciplines

BIS accepts applications from students pursuing Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in:

• Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Chemical, Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Production & Industrial, Metallurgical, Plastics, and other disciplines relevant to laboratory and testing operations.

For Master’s degree-level candidates, eligible disciplines include:

• Agriculture, Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology, and other disciplines relevant to laboratory and testing operations.

BIS Laboratory Internship Duration 2026

The internship is available throughout the year, based on BIS requirements and the timelines of the selected institutions. It can range from a minimum of one month to a maximum of six months.

BIS Internship Stipend 2026

BIS provides a monthly stipend to Interns as follows:

• Rs. 15,000/month – for Interns pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Science or Diploma courses
• Rs. 20,000/month – for Interns pursuing a Bachelor’s in Engineering/Technology, a Master’s degree, or higher

The stipend is calculated on a pro-rata basis for each completed week of internship.

BIS engages Interns across 10 laboratories in India. The maximum number of interns that can be engaged at a time at each lab is given below:

BIS Laboratory Internship: Logistic Support & Attendance

• BIS provides adequate infrastructure at its labs along with proper authorisation for testing and related activities.
• For local/outstation visits undertaken as part of the internship, BIS reimburses travel and stay expenses as admissible to BIS employees at Pay Level 10, or actual expenses, whichever is less.
• Interns must maintain a minimum of 95% attendance out of actual working days.
• Attendance lost due to unforeseen circumstances may be compensated through an extension of the internship, subject to the sponsoring institution’s recommendation and approval by the Head of the concerned BIS Lab — such extension does not entitle the Intern to additional stipend.

Applications are invited on the prescribed proforma from identified Institutions, and processing is done online to the extent possible.

Steps to Apply

1. Check with your University/Institution whether it is recognised for the BIS Internship Scheme.
2. Obtain and fill the prescribed application proforma (Appendix C of the Scheme), including personal details, educational qualifications, preferred internship period, and area of interest (2 preferred options from the eligible disciplines).
3. Attach the required certificate from your Institution (Annexure II) confirming your enrolment/completion of course.
4. Sign the declaration confirming that the information furnished is true and agreeing to the Terms & Conditions of Internship (Annexure I).
5. Submit the application through your Institution to the concerned BIS Laboratory.
6. Await screening and selection by the BIS Screening Committee.

BIS Internship Selection Process

• Applications are screened by a Committee constituted by the Deputy Director General (Laboratories) [DDGL] for each BIS Lab, comprising officers/staff of that laboratory.
• Eligible applications are placed before the Screening Committee, which evaluates candidates on the basis of merit, discipline, and preferred location.
• If no application is received for a particular field, the Committee may recommend inviting fresh applications from the same or other institutions.
• The Committee recommends the required Interns for each discipline, and recommendations (with financial implications) are put up to the Head of the Lab for final approval.

Commencement & Conduct of Internship

• Selected Interns and their Institutions are informed about the selection, including the date of commencement and duration, by the respective BIS laboratory.
• Interns are briefed about the laboratory and modalities by the concerned officer, followed by further briefing from the Head of the Lab.
• The conduct, work, and performance of Interns are periodically reviewed by the Head of the Lab.
• The internship is deemed complete only upon satisfactory submission of a project report based on the work carried out, submitted to the Lab Head.

BIS Laboratory Internship Certificate

Interns who complete the internship with a minimum of 95% attendance and submit their Report to the Head of the BIS Lab will be issued a Certificate of Internship.

Important Terms & Conditions

• The internship shall not be considered as employment, nor does it assure any future employment with BIS.
• No employer-employee relationship is created between BIS and the Intern.
• Interns must follow BIS methodology, instructions, and timelines for their work.
• Interns must maintain confidentiality regarding BIS offices, security arrangements, administrative/operational processes, technical know-how, and data of manufacturers or other organisations obtained during the internship.
• Interns are liable for costs arising from any loss caused to BIS due to willful or accidental lapses, including fraud.
• Violation of instructions, suppression of facts, or unauthorised disclosure of BIS records/documents/Standards can lead to termination of the internship without reference.
• BIS reserves the right to terminate the internship or take other action without assigning any reason.
• Provisions of the Scheme may be relaxed by the Director General, BIS, as considered necessary.
